Can an EKG tell you if you have had a heart attack previously?
Can an EKG tell you if you have had a heart attack previously?I recently experienced severe chest and jaw pain that lasted a few minutes and then went away.I have also been physically exhausted. I went to see my doctor and she did an ekg and told me I wasn't having a heart attack at that time. (my pain symptoms occurred the day before) She did order chest x-rays and blood cultures. I was wondering if the ekg would show if I had previously had a heart attack or only if I was having one at the time of the test? Would x-rays or blood test show if a person had had a heart attack? After the ekg she seemed to dismiss any problems with the heart because I am only 35.
The markers of old infarction(heart attack): When there is heart attack, first to appear on ECG is ST elevation followed by pathological Q waves in relevant leads. ST segment settles in a short time but the Q waves persist for a long time, often for years, as a tell-tale sign of a bygone heart attack. So, in majority of cases, Ecg shows old heart attack
EKG would show up majority of heart attacks, new or old.
