    Can you bruise your esophagus?

2 nights ago, I had a pill right before I went to bed. It felt a little funny in my throat, but I didn't worry about it. Then, at 1:00 in the morning, I woke up with a lot of pain right underneath my sternum. I drank some water, and the pain lessened some. The next day, it hurt in the same place only a tiny bit, except whenever I swallowed. When I swallowed, it hurt a lot. Today, same story, and the pain hasn't lessened a bit. My two guesses are 1. the pill went in funny and got stuck so it went down slowly, bruising the esophagus and 2. the pill got stuck and dissolved in the esophagus, irritating the esophagus with the chemicals. Any help would be greatly appreciated; I don't want to go to the doctor unnecessarily! Thanks.

You can scratch the esophagus and it's not entirely uncommon to do this if a pill gets lodged. Your theory about the pill dissolving in there is correct as well and can cause heartburn. However, with that said, any type of chest pain needs investigation.
